HOW TO UPDATE YOUR STARBOOK
 

CAUTION!
  • Please use new batteries or an AC Adapter or a constant voltage power supply for the STAR BOOK for the update. For data transfer make sure that you apply a stable power supply to a PC used. You may fail to reboot the STAR BOOK if the power supply is turned off during the update. In that case, ask your local Vixen dealer for repair (It is chargeable on you). All your data stored in the STAR BOOK may be initialized after repair.
  • You may have to alter the network settings in your PC for the update. Please record the original settings in the PC before changing them for the update.
  • The data of your observing location stored in the STAR BOOK may be initialized as a result of the update. You should write down your current settings before you start to update.

  • Vixen Co., Ltd. and Vixen's international distributors assume no liability whatsoever for any damage caused by using or installing this update.
    Installation and use are at the customers' risk, unless Vixen Co., Ltd. and Vixen's international distributors recognize a defect in the software.

Procedures for one to one connection

These procedures are for a one to one connection between the STAR BOOK and a PC. When you connect the STAR BOOK to LAN or a router, please click on here.


Requirements
  1. STAR BOOK controller

  2. Power Supply for STAR BOOK

  3. PC (Computer) for data transfer (Ethernet Card on PC)

  4. LAN Crossover Cable

Procedures (for Windows)

  1. Download the latest version of program from STAR BOOK updates information to a directory on your PC.

  2. Connect the STAR BOOK and the PC with the LAN crossover cable. As for a connection of the LAN cable to the PC, please refer to the instructions for the PC.

  3. Turn on the STAR BOOK. (The STAR BOOK turns on when the power supply isapplied.)

  4. Turn on the PC.

  5. Wait for a period of one minute. The STAR BOOK and PC acquire information on networking automatically.

  6. In the STAR BOOK menu, go into "About STAR BOOK". Write down the IP address & Subnet mask numbers. Make a note of the version and build to compare with after the update.

  7. Open the update program that you downloaded in 1 (e.g. Update18.exe).

  8. You should be at the update program screen. Enter the STAR BOOK IP address as you obtained at 6. Click the O.K. button.


  9. Wait for a couple minutes until the message below appears on the screen. It shows you that the update is finished successfully. Click OK.




  10. Turn off the STAR BOOK to reboot. Turn on the STAR BOOK again. In the STAR BOOK menu, go into "About STAR BOOK". Confirm that the version and build are changed.

  11. When the update is done, turn off the STAR BOOK and disconnect from PC.



    * If your update is unsuccessful, follow the directions below to change settings of the PC.
    >> For Windows XP users
    >> For Windows 98 or Windows Me users

For Windows XP (Administrator authorization is required.)


Confirming your IP Address

  1. In Windows, select START - CONTROL PANEL - NETWORK CONNECTIONS OPTION.

  2. Select LOCAL AREA CONNECTION and click it.




  3. Select the SUPPORT tab.

  4. Write down your computer's IP address & Subnet mask numbers to replace them to the original after changing them for the update.




  5. Click OK on all screens and close dialog boxes.

Obtaining IP Address automatically

  1. In windows, go to START - CONTROL PANEL - NETWORK CONNECTIONS - LOCAL AREA CONNECTION



    - under the general heading, click Properties - scroll down to INTERNET PROTOCOL
    (TCP/IP)




    - highlight it and click PROPERTIES. (If your computer does not have internet protocol, hit install, choose a protocol, hit add, wait and follow directions.)


  2. On the next screen, click on the button to obtain an IP address automatically.




  3. Hit OK on all screens and CLOSE. Wait for a couple minutes before going to the next step so that the computer and controller can communicate.


  4. Go to the procedure 6 in "How to Update your STAR BOOK" and follow the directions thereafter.

For Windows 98 or Windows Me


Confirming your IP Address

  1. Select START - RUN

  2. Enter "winipcfg" and click OK.

  3. In the list of Ethernet adapters, scroll down to an appropriate LAN card to communicate with the STAR BOOK and click it.




  4. Write down your computer's IP address & Subnet mask numbers to replace them to the original setting after changing them for the update.

  5. Click OK on all screens and close dialog boxes.

Obtaining the IP Address automatically

  1. Select START - SETTINGS - CONTROL PANEL - NETWORK.

  2. In the list of current network components (N), select an appropriate LAN card (Ethernet adapter) for communication with the STAR BOOK and click its PROPERTIES. The PROPERTIES of TCP/IP are opened.




  3. Select IP ADDRESS tab and click on the button to obtain an IP address automatically.




  4. Click OK on screens to close NETWORK.

  5. Follow directions appear on the screen to reboot the PC. (Click YES (Y).)

  6. Go to the procedure 6 in how to update your STAR BOOK and follow the directions thereafter.

Connecting the STAR BOOK to a LAN or a Router

The STAR BOOK will have the IP Address automatically at the time of turning on the power supply when it is connected to a LAN using a DHCP server or a router.

  1. Connect the STAR BOOK to the LAN using the DHCP or to the router.

  2. Turn on the power supply of the STAR BOOK.

  3. Go to the procedure 6 in how to update your STAR BOOK and follow the directions thereafter.
(Please refer to the network administrator or a manufacturer of the router for their settings if you are not familiar with them.)
